In our continuing Q & A with Ellen Voie, President/Founder of “Women in Trucking” we present the final installment of the 32 questions including response from Heather.
30. Is CRST currently your sponsor? Why or Why Not? If not, who terminated the sponsorship?
Ellen: No, they have never been a sponsor. CRST is a member however. They should be given the opportunity to provide a safe environment for their drivers and that includes joining the association as a member.
31. You have contacted several people, asking them to submit ideas about creating a “Best Practices Policy”, some of these contributions, attributed to you, have appeared in articles. Why were the original authors of the contributions not given credit for their ideas?
Ellen: Who are these people who state that I have contacted them? Heather, please give me the reference you are citing. (Admin*** following an email exchange that still exists, some sentences were utilized in an article shortly afterwards. Due to the overwhelming response to these questions the persons do not wish to cause further embarrassment but the matters can be discussed privately)
32. Your “Friend” recently made phone calls to explain that your “Best Practices” White Paper you had your “Eye” on will require $100,000 to produce, Please Explain that price tag? (Admin*** this is in reference to Marge Bailey conversation days before these letters were exchanged)
Ellen: Heather, I have never made this claim regarding cost. Please identify who you are quoting and how they arrived at this estimate. This is another instance of “she said-he said” that was not attributed to me and I am not aware of the context.
I would like to clarify something about associations. I am a certified association executive. This means that I have undergone extensive training in how to run an association. I formed Women In Trucking through the process of legal applications, by-laws, anti-trust issues, non-conflict policies, employment law, etc. One of the first activities I did was to create a board of directors. I am legally bound to the collective instructions of the board of directors. The board is the governing body and includes a professional driver, industry executives, etc. When people criticize me for not being a driver, they don’t understand association management. I report to people who have over 300 years experience in the trucking industry and were chosen for their knowledge and experience. They determine my priorities and monitor my activities. (Admin**** After receiving these questions a phone call between Ellen Voie, Marge Bailey, Char Pingel & Desiree Wood took place.
Ellen was reminded that Tracey Hamm had been involved in CRST Sexual Harassment case and was following Ellen on Twitter and Facebook.
Ellen was also advised that she had discredited Desiree Wood to filmmaker Beverly Petersen. Ellen did not recall this.
Tracy Hamm received an email moments after this short phone call and spoke to Ellen Voie. Tracy Hamm has read this Q & A and said she would be surprised if these answers above remained the same following her phone conversation with Ellen Voie.
A follow-up letter was written to clarify permission to post this dialogue due to the legal disclaimer attached to the email questions. This was due to the indicators present that Ellen Voie tends to be a “Litigious” person. ******

Dear Ms. Voie:
I appreciate you answering my questions. I would be lying if I said you have persuaded me. I am left with more questions about your experience level with Women’s Issues. You have left me to conclude that you are not proactive in searching for Women involved in the CRST case because I know there are many at your fingertips you have made little effort to interview.
You seem to be only satisfied with a management perspective of what is occurring. You state that you had to earn respect working in a male dominated industry but you fail to see that earning respect among Women Truckers when you are not one but aspire to represent them puts you in a precarious position.
I assume you know my questions will be made public to you and you state that you want transparency but you put a disclaimer in your responses so I cannot publish your answers for the public. This does not constitute transparency.
Many of your answers seem more inclined toward you rather than women truckers and despite the common knowledge that it was your organization that removed or deleted evidence of misconduct. I did not bring up the issue that your qualifications have come into question because of the handling of that Cyber-Stalking but you seemed to want to include this information.
I feel that you missed the opportunity to understand that if you cannot control a message forum and you have not experienced first-hand what it means to pick up a load, manage a logbook, dock a trailer, find suitable parking and you are continually dismissive of issues, you seem nothing more than a female corporate apologist.
You do admit to incidences to conceal and/or find fault with others who question you and I also find that you do not seem to be prepared to assert yourself in the Women Truckers need their issues raised properly.
I will make the questions public this weekend and I offer you the chance to give permission for your answers to be made public if you are 100% confident of your responses this should not present a problem.
Otherwise, I will make a disclaimer to say what I gleaned from your responses and allow other to provided supporting information to the contrary.

Please explain to me what you are referring to when you state that I removed “evidence of misconduct.” Please provide evidence that I have mishandled a cyber stalker. These are claims that are not substantiated. You claim that I am accountable for the WIT message forum, but there are people lying and slandering on sites which hide their identity. If there is one thing you can do to assist, it would be to tell me what you want in regard to what happened on the forum in the past. Why is this still an issue?
I am not aware of any CRST cover-up, if you have evidence to the contrary, please provide proof. You claim that I admit to incidences to conceal and/or find fault with others who question me, but this is not true. You are making assumptions about me. Stick to facts that you can prove. In regard to your assertion that I do not understand what it’s like to “to pick up a load, manage a logbook, dock a trailer, find suitable parking” you are wrong.
I accompanied my former husband on the road extensively. We strapped our son in the bunk in his baby seat and I traveled with him on many trips over 20 years. We owned three trucks and I drove them (not under a load). I also owned a consulting business for 18 years and audited log books, kept compliance records, completed compliance paperwork and more. I spent a lot of time at truck stops, in the truck, at shippers, etc. I have been honest about not having a CDL and have not misrepresented my background.
However, my role as an association manager means that I report to the population we represent. Only 20% of our members are drivers, and many of those are men. The greater part of my job is for those who are in the industry, not just drivers. That’s what the board of directors is for, to provide the insight into the industry.
Now I would like you to answer some questions.

We are not a driver association, but OOIDA is.
There are women in trucking who do not drive. There are women in this industry who sell, fix, dispatch, recruit and lead companies. We represent all of them. Have you talked to any of our members to get insight on WHY they appreciate our efforts? Have you taken the time to find members who have been helped by our association? Why do you want to hurt these people who have joined and are benefiting from our services by continually questioning our activities and making false assumptions about who we are are and who we represent?

In a second requested correction for today I am translating for Marge Bailey some adjustments to the above correction.
I have also been inquiring about the booth that we have understood will be provided to “Truckers against Trafficking” which many of us understood was going to be provided by WIT.
I am cutting and pasting Marge Bailey’s email to me today because the corrections and adjsutments make it appear I am mistaken but actually I am just repeating what I was told so here goes a cut and paste:
“I asked Char, Ellen’s ass’t, about it, Ellen is unavailable right now to ask & I forgot to ask her earlier when I spoke with her, and Char said we don’t pay for our booths, they are donated, but Ellen may have told them she could maybe help get them some free space because of their cause. Also to Char’s knowledge booths cannot share space with another exhibiter so that would not be why Ellen said anything about it. So if I don’t get back with you before that show please use what Char told me. Thanks for asking us about it and giving us an opportunity to respond. If I learn anything differently I will email you ASAP.
Since you’ve not edited that statement about the 100K grant yet, please also edit the last sentence where you say it will be used for other WIT projects, that is not true. It should say the entire grant, if we get it, will be used for harrassment & all the issues that involve that on several levels. Here again I got it wrong, not you. You reported exactly what I said but I got it wrong on two points. Thanks for changing it.”
That is from Marge Bailey WIT Director and please note that the lowest grant available is 40K according to an earlier email so if I am understanding this correctly now.
40K is the lowest grant but a 100K Grant was applied for and will be used for what Marge said above, if they get it.

As a co-founder of Chapter 61 Ministries and Truckers Against Trafficking, I would like to state for the record and to clear up any misunderstanding, that our organization was never promised a booth in Dallas from WIT or Real Women Truckers. We independently contacted the organizers for GATS to inquire about booths. WIT did provide TAT a booth at the Big Rig conference in Tulsa this past October, and continue to support TAT. Real Women Truckers, specifically Desiree, has also been a supporter of our cause and has passed out wallet cards with the human trafficking hotline number as well as spoken out about the issue to people she has encountered in the course of her job and through her facebook and twitter accounts. We, at TAT, appreciate all of the support from WIT, Real Women Truckers, as well as other members of the trucking industry. I spoke to “Trucker’s Justice Center” about Prime Discrimination case and was told Ellen Voie was contacted about this case.
Can Ellen Voie help us understand why she did not want to get involved?

This case is in regards to a female student who could not be provided a female trainer and because the company would not let a man train her she was fired.
Ellen Voie has sort of branded herself the “Go To GAl” Or Woman’s Trucking Voice yet in a 3 segments of this interview the answers are very disconnected from Women’s Trucking Issues.
The board of WIT all have bios with connections and affiliations that beg for an answer to why a non-profit status is needed for these people while Women Truckers are saving their money to afford a $25 membership in hopes that this is their Advocate for change.
There does not seem to be any passion to help Women Truckers and therefore a huge grant awarded to WIT after reading the answers to Heathers questions regarding one single company involved in Harassment case make me feel uneasy.

Ellen was contacted by Paul Taylor (the attorney suing Prime) about the Prime Disgrimination case and she was asked to participate in the lawsuit to provide evidence that Prime is guilty. Neither Prime nor the woman suing them are members of WIT therefore it is a lawsuit outside of our organization and like any other association WIT represents their members.
Desiree I thought you were going to talk with us before publishing any more unsubstanuated heresey but you published the Prime ‘rumor’ w/o asking anyone from WIT about it. I put faith in you and you let me down. When I’ve made an error I correct it as soon as I know about it but you, making an error, don’t do the same. I really like you and thought I could trust you. Please restore my faith in you. You have made some corrections on this forum I asked you to do and you followed through. That was so encouraging then I see you print the Prime thing and my heart just broke. You didn’t contact me or Ellen about it before you posted the heresey is what broke my heart.
We have not heard that the grant has been funded but if it is it will be published as to what the grant will be used for. You are now playing it up before the fact because I made an error in what I told Donna Smith in a private conversation before something actually happens. Which again, even if I said something, it is heresey until you talk to me to find out what I said and then you could publish what I said because you got it from the source. Donna is not me.
Desiree, is my faith in your integrity now unfounded?
For the past three months, I have been torn between the two factions: Trucker Desiree, and the organization, Women In Trucking.
I was sickened by the negativity and accusations, and had urged both parties to open the lines of communications. In my personal conversations with “Trucker Desiree”, I came to love her, and admire her passions and convictions against the injustices and harassment against the women in the trucking industry. My love and gratitude also extend to Marge Bailey, from the organization Women In Trucking, for all of her perseverance and hard work in getting me re-employed again. This past December, 2009, when I was on the verge on homelessness, it was Trucker Desiree who put out the call for help. Many strangers, friends I have not yet met, responded with incredible graciousness and generosity, and
because of their financial support, I was able to keep a roof over my head, and food for me and my six kitties. Ellen Voie was so gracious…she personally took the time to call me, and even sent me a lovely Christmas card with a gift certificate, “From Shadow to your kitties”.
Why do people keep insisting upon denigrating, and crucifying the organization, Women In Trucking? But what hurts me the most, are the personal attacks against some very good hearted people with good intentions from that organization. Why do these women continue to be villified?
I was so encouraged when I popped into Trucker Desiree’s site here, and saw that Heather Rose had opened the lines of communications. I love her blog, and think well of her.
When Marge Bailey told me that she and Desiree have spoken on the phone, my heart was so filled with joy, I love them both more than they know…I just KNOW that issues can be resolved, and questions answered. We don’t need a miracle from God, but just calmer and clearer heads here.
I also struggle with anger issues, but I now pray more, and focus on the positives instead of the negatives. For me, it’s about balancing the ying w/ the yang, the bad w/ the good, the negative w/ the positive. Why do I not see anyone focusing on the good that WIT has done, and is doing? On the other hand, anyone, if they wished to, could do the extreme opposite to Trucker Desiree, and only focus on the negatives, and she could be the whipping girl of the month. What is the point of that?!
I know that Desiree and Marge can agree on this…that I am naive in many ways, and I see so much good on both sides. Ellen
Voie is a very smart, and caring person, and to accuse her of some
of the unsavory comments I have read, must be very hurtful to her.
Is compassion and understanding a relic of the past? Does anyone here believe in God, or His teachings? Who remembers the “Golden Rule” or practice any of the Ten Commandments? “Do not bear false witness against another”. To me, false witness is “murder by character assassination”.
You have questions, and it seems to me that WIT, Ellen Voie, and others are more than willing to help anyone to understand their mission, and where they stand.
I wish I could say more, but I will only get a few hours sleep as it is..and I get emotional, and unable to express myself in a more coherent fashion…

At the time Trucker Desiree published your “Co-Driver Nighmare Video”, it was only as a visual aid. No one expected your follow up Video “Thank You Trucker Desiree” which was clearly made while you were in a confused state. In that video you told how you were about to be homeless and had DAC Issues that prevented you from working.

There are other Women who have been WIT members and unemployed and they were not given FREE Memberships, Gift Cards, and a Job with a New Truck to Promote Ellen Voie. You knew you were to be a poster child for WIT for accepting those things and it has not been an easy road.
Mike Rone corrected MANY things before Marge Bailey began looking into getting you reemployed and I know she worked very hard in doing this. We have learned in this series of questions that Marge Bailey does go above and beyond the call of duty to help someone get hired.
What we are seeking answers to right here is how does a new female student apply Ellen Voie’s “How to go to CDL School” to become employed by Wal-Mart, Frito-Lay, or Tyson Foods” There is a missing piece of the puzzle.
Donna & Allen Smith of “Ask the Trucker” http://www.askthetrucker.com made a post within hours of your “Thank You Trucker Desiree” Video and people were sending you money on paypal and by mail which you did not fully declare to everyone involved. I understand it was several hundred all told. You mention the gift card from Ellen Voie’s Doggie but why none of the others?
There was another Woman who is a WIT member who was included in that post. She also receive some donations and you became incensed that anyone would give her money when it was YOU who was becoming homeless and she just had recently got a roof over her head. This certainly is not a loving reaction to someone in distress and also suffereing.
Emails have been sent around that appear to cause harm to ALL parties. They were received and shared. They seem to be in an attempt to instigate problems rather than smooth them over, some are from you.
We appreciate Marge Bailey clarifying Trucker Cupid . There is no doubt that this would help experienced drivers meet someone.
We feel stongly on this site that this is the wrong message for female students entering if a carreer in trucking for themselves is what they are after.
As you well know, being labeled a truck hopper as a student implies you are a potential sex partner either willingly or through badgering.
Therefore , you are offered little company support or not taken seriously much like “The boy who cried Wolf”.
Unfortunately, these ladies who do this make it bad for those of us who seriously want to work.
Christy, many of your emails have been collected and matched up from various “factions” you mention.
I suggest you quit while you are ahead.
Congratulations on your new Truck and Job and PLEASE do not emabarass Ellen Voie and Marge Bailey any further.
I have been sitting back and reading these posts from the beginning. I have to agree with Admin in regards to NJKatwoman.”Quit while you are ahead” was being quite nice. Embarrasing those who have helped or attemted to help you and yourself needs to stop. Forgiveness? Hmm I believe forgiveness might only be considered when it is asked for.
Now let’s move on to the issues at hand.
Desiree has seen that the propper research was done in bring “FACTS” to light regarding the issues discussed in these articles. A “FACT” is just that, a “FACT”. There will allways be “another side of the story” but “FACT” cannot be argued. I am proud and honored to be friends with someone who put herself on the line to bring us these “FACTS”.
Issues have been braught to light that otherwise would have stayed under the rug where they have been swept for a long time. Those who have had a hand in the “sweeping” have been exposed and hopefully will be held accoutable for their actions. I do not mean that harshly. Being held accountable can be as easy as admitting their shortcomings, saying they are sorry and moving on.
As hard as this has been for you Desiree, I know I speak for many when I say “Thank You”, and whether you realize it or not, you truly have made a difference.

Do you realize you are chastising people for doing the exact thing that you yourself are doing? What gives Christy? Why do you have a certain sense of entitlement that allows you to chastise people for chastising?
You tend to use Christianity as a crutch instead of an empowerment. I have watched you pick and choose where to insert Christianity and frankly I find it insulting. You have spent much energy assassinating others over the past few months yourself, even degrading those who have gone out of their way to help you. Your post might have more credibility if you actually practiced what you preach.
Ellen Voie is no doubt a very smart, well educated woman. Being smart and well educated does not make someone perfect or beyond reproach. It also does not guarantee that one will make good decisions or that ones decisions are not going to be seen as controversial and therefore questioned.
Desiree Wood is also smart and educated. She is also very compassionate, out-spoken and generous. She doesn’t sit on the fence about the things she believes in, and money is not a motivating factor for her. She is not perfect and doesn’t claim to be, everything she does comes from her heart and she asks for nothing in return. The qualities Desiree possesses within her soul are, in my opinion, a gift given to a very special few.
The important difference, pertaining to the communications between Ellen Voie and Desiree Wood, and the biggest reason that Desiree is not “the whipping girl of the month” is simple. Ellen Voie has chosen to head up and build a business, earning her living through an organization she chose to name WOMEN IN TRUCKING. Ellen, through her own choices and actions, is in a position of obligation and is expected to conduct herself and her business in a professional, truthful manner. This includes answering questions and responding to accusations that may arise. Desiree Wood is not binded by such obligations, she is a driver, motivated by her own experiences and the need to help other women from going through the same. In short, you are treating this as if two organizations are bickering about who is right and that is not what this series of communications was about at all.
I can’t help but wonder if you have ever had the desire or inclination to help someone without expecting or anticipating some type of benefit in return.
There is nothing wrong with debate, if everyone thought exactly the same we would live a dull and stagnant existence with no need or inclination to correct and improve.

I really have no idea as to what you are referring to Dana. I have never put down the people who have helped me, in fact, I have made an “Attitude of Gratitude” video to thank all that have helped me through a very difficult time. Getting internet is sporadic for me, I can’t always get to to a Pilot truck stop, and I don’t have much free time anymore.
I don’t know where you are obtaining your information, but it seems that someone has steered you totally in the wrong direction about me. I have not degraded anyone.
As for helping people, anyone who truly knows me, knows that I enjoy helping others when I can, and do not expect anything in return, in fact, I keep my good deeds quiet. As for your feeling “insulted”, all I can say to you is, “People who matter to me don’t mind, and those who mind, don’t matter.” Have a nice day.

In fact, Ellen is an acquaintance of mine and I have know her for about five years, having been introduced to her by one of my oldest friends, a pilot, here in Wisconsin. Also, she is correct in saying that her concerns were shared among several people — including me — at a luncheon. It was after that lunch conversation that I looked into things on her behalf and provided her with the publicly available information I found, but she did not “hire” me to do so.

This series of questions was presented to give you the opportunity to present a forum where you could elaborate from your video presentation for the upcoming documentry where you said things that are offensive to Women Truckers you have branded yourself to represent.
You contend that what you said was misinterpeted yet you elaborate in Heathers questions with much more distubing comments & retractions.
You go on to make assumptions about Tracy Hamm that might give a basis of Libel & Slander yet you seem to be focused on suing me.
We have at least clarified that WIT is not a Driver Advocate & you state time & again your feelings or beliefs about the Women Truckers yet you are applying for a rather large sum of money to write a “Best Practices” paper you clearly show no passion to represent for these issues.
These are not sorority girls Ellen , they may come from troubled childhoods & violent traumas & they have learned to FIGHT BACK when feasible & SUBMIT like an animal when there is no escape.

He absolutely did NOT say one word of that when I spoke to him on the phone & he did NOT correct my post when I emailed it to him on 3/3/10.

That you have answered these 32 questions in the manner you have & had so many misstatements & still intend to receive funding to represent Women Truckers makes me personally very ill at ease.
The political affiliations your board & corporations joined with comments made to me in emails & on your board make me feel a wider scope is needed into this “Best Practices” grant.
If you don’t have the passion for the topic now applying for funds might give you some motivation but you truly do not show you can relate or have the desire to relate to REAL Women Truckers.

I’ve been out here struggling to earn a living for 14 years. I have been harrassed sexually & other wise the entire time.
The problem is, I never felt that there was a safe forum in which to complain without taking the risk of being black listed.
I worked for one company, not going to name names, where the harrassment as so blatantly obvious, the terminal manager just happened to be a woman. I kept wondering, why is this being allowed to exist?
Why is she not paying attention?
Why is she not doing anything about it?
Then, I found out, she was having an affair with the supervisor. Bingo!
I could tell you story after story. Problem is, we have nowhere to go without the fear of suffering dire consequences.
In my opinion, everything I read & hear about Ellen Voie is out for Ellen Voie.
She does not give a damn about the women out here. And we have just as much right as any man to be out here!
Sexual Affairs in the Workplace contribute to a Hostile Work Environment for others, primarily other females.
In a Male Dominated Industry like Trucking, one female who is either having and affair or has become intoxicated with the attention of many men around her will often become more inclined to defend them and retalitate or cover up things she should not.
This seems to be what is happening in many instances.

This is one reason Women in the Trucking Industry need retraining as well. They may be accomplices to retaliation because they believe they carry more clout due to the affair or additional attention the receive from the male population which encourages them to defend rather than investigate

Firstly, I am aghast that you could come up w/ such an assumption, that I was “playing each side for everything you could get”. I wasn’t “playing” anyone. I am not of that mindset, I just
wanted to get to know each side, and since no-one had done me any harm, I could not feel any animosity toward anyone. I really just
wanted to see the lines of communications open up, and for the meaness and mudslinging, and character assassinations to stop.
I have never said an unkind word about Desiree. I feel that there is someone who has been spreading some very vicious lies about me, and people who know me would know that I am not capable of the manipulations that I have seen displayed by others. As for your remark about There was another Woman who is a WIT member who was included in that post. She also receive some donations and you became incensed that anyone would give her money when it was YOU who was becoming homeless and she just had recently got a roof over her head. This certainly is not a loving reaction to someone in distress and also suffereing.” This is a woman who I have gifted, and who I spoke with again yesterday, and I will be gifting her again. Perhaps if you heard the WHOLE story, and the TRUTH, you wouldn’t be saying what you did.
I have always thanked the people who have helped me, and I continue to do so. Don’t you read my twitter posts? I can’t thank Mike Rone enough for all he has done for me. In my video, “Attitude of Gratitude” I have thanked everyone for all they have done…that I would not be in this better position without all of their encouragement, support, etc. Trust me lady, you have no idea of the depths of my gratitude, and frankly, I refuse to allow anyone to malign me further. And I don’t know who came up with the expression, “Poster Child for WIT” and it was hurled about as an insult to me. Frankly, Desiree has always stated to me, “If they want to help you, LET them. Let them DO THEIR JOBS”. I am, have been, and will continue to be grateful to the good people who have helped me, everyone from Trucker Desiree, to Mike Rone, Marge Bailey, Matthew C, and there are many others. I talk to some of them on the phone on a fairly frequent basis. There is much that you do not know, and you have made unkind statements and assumptions. Someone has been spreading some poison, it started a few months ago. Someone to whom I have never said an unkind word, or done a moments harm to. If you want the truth, or have questions, all you have to do is email me, and we can get to know each other. Don’t listen to manipulators who bear false witness in order to boost up themselves.

I really dont want to be here in ALL this Drama. But, I do have something to say. NJKatwoman is very grateful for EVERYONES Help. As one of her friends I had to step in on her behalf. I have Advised her to let it go about this board. Wipe it off and move on.
So, Now heres what I really think.
I really dont know you people. But, from the understanding of the “About” Tab. I guess you guys are trying help Truckers. Well, Thats all good but you have woman on here taking it alittle bit further. Its called Gossip. Starting Rumors and Slander. Real women in trucking ( in the real world ) Dont have the time to get on the internet and have something to say about other women truck drivers. Sorry, but thats the truth.
I know the internet has come a long ways. It helps some people and sometimes it hurts people. I think everyone should move on. And whatever the blog is about stick to the subject. Anyone like me surfing through would think this is the after school locker room.
And as far everyone having there own dedicated website for women truckers, PLAY NICE. Jesus Christ, I swear, everyone ganging up on people to play sides. ITS F**KING STUPID! Want help people other there Great! But, dont be a politician and say you have to be on one side or the other. Dont say your not. Because the word spreads quickly on the internet or by telephone.
These websites should be like support groups. Not to play games with people.
